Grant helps community arts shine

ChildrensDay005A $10,000 grant from the Rotorua Trust is helping shine the sunbeam of creativity on the community.

Marc Spijkerbosch, the Community Arts Advisor for the Rotorua Lakes Council, says Trust funding has been integral in making three important arts events happen.

Music at the Rotunda offers free performances from local musicians and groups at the Band Rotunda in the Government Gardens. The event ran over a six-week period during March this year, with a free concert each weekend.

Now in its tenth year, Music at the Rotunda attracts several hundred people to the performances.

Children’s Day at the Redwoods on 1 March provided fun activities in the beautiful forest setting adjacent to Rotorua city.

Marc says the location and the timing of the Children’s Day are ideal.

    “It’s an amazing environment – it’s local, it’s cool and it’s safe.”

This event has been running for a number of years and is attractive to families. Children play forest games and other play activities as well as joining in the creative arts.

New Zealand Music Month is held in May and Rotorua’s participation this year will include a range of seminars and youth workshops.

A series of concerts started last year will continue this year to allow youth and other members of the community to play original, live music. A CD of the local, original music was produced from the concerts.

“We absolutely acknowledge the cooperation and support of the Rotorua Trust,” Marc says.
