The Rotorua Trust is playing an important role in the growth of services available at the Linton Park Community Centre since its start-up two years ago.

The centre is based at the former Rotorua West Bowling Club site, and its main focus is around the area bounded by Malfroy Road, Pukehangi Road, Clayton Road and Edmund/Pandora Roads.

Rick Mansell, the centre coordinator, said the main aim is to build the community from the ground up and to draw on people from all different walks of life in the community coming together.

The centre now has about 40 community groups using the facility monthly and about 500-700 users per week coming through the doors.  The centre offers programmes ranging from parenting and church groups to horticulture, along with
a number of community trust organisations which regularly meet.

A number of new programmes launched recently have also helped to extend the assistance further at various levels to the community. A Te Reo Maori programme is now offered to help those wanting to learn the language, for example, using a system that provides people with a safe, supportive learning environment.

“People come in with ideas and we never say ‘no’.  We just point out what the barriers are and see how we can overcome those.”
