Maui Tū is a project that has been specifically set up in response to the number of students who are disengaged from mainstream schooling.  The Rotorua Trust has contributed $15,000 towards this project based on OwhataMarae that aims to connect with youngsters, aged 14-15 who have drifted out of education pathways.

Maui Tū is a collaborative partnership between the Ministry of Education, TeWaiarikiPurea Trust and TeAho o Te Kura Pounamu (formerly The Correspondence School). Te Kura employs Kelvin Tapuke and also funds the teacher aide time through TeWaiarikiPurea Trust.

Each student has a personalisedprogrammecontextualised around their interests and potential.  Each week these students take part in three days of formal learning and two days where they are involved in shadow days/internships to further their own passions and interests.  To this end, if there are community groups, kaumatua or businesses who would be willing to mentor these students, then Kelvin would be keen to hear from them.

All the students in the programme are enrolled with Te Kura and have a learning programme delivered by
    Te Kura teachers.

Kelvin says funding from the Trust helps with the hire of a van, a necessity in transporting students
to and from the marae and a camp near the Buried Village.

Here they are taught life skills and encouraged to meet the goals they set for themselves before
being able to come on the course.
