Well-known and respected community
leader, Lyall Thurston, was re-elected as a trustee
in the 2007 Rotorua Trust elections after a break of
three years.
Originally a trustee from 2001 to 2004, when he chose
to step down, he is no stranger to most people in the
Rotorua District. An internationally respected public
health lobbyist and advocate, Lyall is a Life Member
of CCS Disability Action (formerly known as NZCCS).
A past national president of that organisation, he is
currently chairman of the Rotorua Museum Centennial
Trust $19 million fundraising campaign to complete the
Rotorua Bath House Museum – Te Whare Taonga o
Te Arawa – to its original 1906 design, and a
board member of the Lakes District Health Board where
he chairs the community and public health committee.
A former member of the Teacher Registration Board,
National Board of Workbridge and of the Ministerial
Advisory Committee on Health and Disability, and former
Rotorua District Councillor, he has served as a school
trustee since the advent of Tomorrow’s Schools
in 1989. Lyall was awarded the Companion of the Queen’s
Service Order (QSO) for community service in 1998 and
is a Justice of the Peace.
He and his wife, Gabrielle, have three sons.
