Tertiary Study Award

Purpose

The Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust tertiary study awards are available to assist with full time undergraduate studies at any New Zealand Tertiary Institution for students who have attended for the full 2009 academic year, a secondary school in the Rotorua District, and whose immediate family reside in the Rotorua District.

General Requirements

Funding will be available for up to 50 students to undertake full time study at any New Zealand Tertiary Institution.

The funding is open to students who are resident in the Rotorua District, are New Zealand citizens or have permanent resident status and have attended for the full current academic year, one of the following secondary schools:

Rotorua Boys’ High School
Rotorua Girls’ High School
Rotorua Lakes High School
Western Heights High School
Reporoa College
John Paul College
Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Ruamata
Te Kura Kaupapa o Te Koutu

The student’s immediate family must currently reside in the Rotorua District.

Terms and Conditions

Each tertiary study award has a value of $2000 per year which is payable in two instalments of $1,000 on 1 March and 1 July, during the term of the award.

All funding will be renewable, if progress is satisfactory, for a maximum period of Four (4) years.

Funding is only provided to assist students obtain their first tertiary qualification.

In the case where a student is undertaking a joint degree funding will be provided for the normal time required to obtain the ‘first” qualification. (ie in the case of a BA/LLB funding will be for 3 years.) Where a student is undertaking Honours then funding will only be provided for the period required for the primary qualification

Students are able to hold other awards and scholarships in conjunction with the tertiary study award so long as the value of these other awards and scholarships does not exceed $10,000 per year. The Trust is to be notified of all such awards and scholarships.

Successful recipients will be expected to keep the Trust informed of any difficulties they may experience during the academic year, and will need to provide a summary of their academic results during the year. Failure to provide this information will result in the funding being withheld

The Trust reserves the right to terminate any funding because of unsatisfactory conduct or progress on the part of the recipient.

The Trust reserves the right to publicly present the successful applicants.

Criteria for Awards

Study awards are available to enable applicants to study any degree or diploma course at any New Zealand university or polytechnic.

Without limiting the selection panel’s ability to select successful applicants, in general the awards will be made on the following basis.

  1. Up to 12 Awards based solely on academic ability.
  2. Up to 12 Awards weighted towards academic ability but also taking into account an applicant’s Leadership skills, Cultural involvement, School and wider community involvement.
  3. Up to 10 Awards weighted towards special circumstances either identified to the selection panel by the applicant or the applicant’s school.
    1. Awards made under this category will also take into account the applicants Leadership skills, Cultural involvement, School and wider community involvement. In addition applicants in this category must clearly demonstrate that they have the necessary academic ability to enable them to successfully complete their chosen course of study.
  4. At least 16 Awards weighted towards an applicants Leadership skills, Cultural involvement, School and wider community involvement but also taking into account their academic ability.

ALL applicants must demonstrate that they have the necessary academic ability to enable them to complete their chosen course of tertiary study in the minimum time allowed for their course.

Application Process

Successful applicants will be determined based solely on the application form which is submitted and as such we recommend that you discuss your application with your school principal or school careers adviser, before it is lodged for consideration.

LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Material to be included

In addition to the application form, applicants must include a copy of their birth certificate or photo page from their passport, evidence of permanent residency (if they are not a New Zealand citizen) along with a copy of their “Record of Learning Query” from the NZQA website.

NO other supporting documentation is required with the application, however, applicants may be asked at a later date to produce additional supporting documentation.

Selection Process

The selection panel will determine the successful applicants for a tertiary study award based on the information contained in their application form and in some instances in addition to reviewing the application form, they may consider it necessary to interview some applicants. If this is the case then applicants will be informed in January (after NCEA results are available). These applicants will need to be available to be interviewed by the panel in early February 2010.

Applicants will be notified of the selection panel's decision before 9th February 2010 and the presentation ceremony will be held on 11th February 2010.

The Trust reserves the right to reduce the number of study awards.

Applications for ALL Trust scholarships have closed for 2009. Applications will re-open late in 2010 and more information will be provided on this web site at that time.

Funding is available to assist with full time undergraduate studies at any New Zealand tertiary institution for students who (along with their immediate family) currently reside in the Rotorua District and attend (or have attended in the current academic year), a secondary school in the Rotorua District.
